Choosing a Balkans eSIM starts with the countries on your route, including transit stops. An eSIM is built into the phone: the plan installs as a profile, with no plastic card. On a motorhome trip you also need offline maps, the correct campsite entrance and a way to contact your host. Prepare those details before driving so a weak signal does not leave essential instructions out of reach.

Begin with the route and the vehicle
Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia make an illustrative route for a Balkan journey. Decide which stops fit the time you have. If the motorhome is rented, confirm its cross-border permissions with the rental company, and check with the insurer that cover applies in every country on the route. Do not assume that a route suitable for a car will suit the height, width or weight of a motorhome.
Contact overnight stops directly for your dates, especially outside the summer season. Save the entrance location, contact number and check-in instructions rather than relying only on a general town pin. Local parking and overnight-stay rules need checking at the destination: a place appearing in an app does not itself establish permission to stay.
You can check border crossings, tolls and fuel costs along the route in the OpenVan.camp roadbook, and the entry rules for your passport in the visa calculator.
Keep one copy that works offline
Download the maps you need and save bookings and essential documents before driving. A passenger can check live information where it is safe to do so; the driver should stop safely before using the phone. If you travel as a group or in several vehicles, agree what you will do if you become separated or the connection drops, including the next meeting place.
Apps with offline maps are covered in the OpenVan.camp guide to motorhome apps.
Choose a Balkans eSIM for the countries on your route
The current Horizon Balkans eSIM covers 11 countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. That includes all four countries on the example route. For any other stop, check the full country list rather than inferring coverage from geography.
Prices on 2 November 2026, from the plan page:
- 1 GB for 7 days: €1.29
- 3 GB for 30 days: €3.51 (the 15-day option costs the same)
- 5 GB for 30 days: €5.73
- 10 GB for 30 days: €11.28
- 20 GB for 30 days: €22.38
Horizon's plan page suggests 3–5 GB for a week in one or two countries and 8–12 GB for a two-week trip across several borders.
Kosovo needs a separate plan
Kosovo is excluded from the Balkans package. A detour there needs a separate Horizon Kosovo plan or a different regional package that explicitly includes it, such as the current Europe + Kosovo package. Choose the package for the itinerary you will actually drive, including any planned transit or detour.
Install your eSIM before leaving Wi-Fi
Check that the phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, then install over a reliable Wi-Fi connection before you set off. Follow the selected plan's instructions, then choose the travel eSIM for mobile data in the phone's settings.
Review roaming and automatic data switching on your home SIM as well. If they are left on, the phone may still roam on your home operator's network. A travel plan does not change those settings for you.
Horizon plans are data-only, without a local number or ordinary calls and SMS. Messaging apps can use the data connection, so you can still message or call your host through them. Hotspot sharing is included and uses the same purchased allowance, so consider laptop updates, streaming and photo backups when deciding how much data to buy. Fixed-data plans have no daily cap, so you can use the whole allowance in a single day.
Local networks, the device and the surrounding terrain affect reception and speed, and coverage in remote areas varies. Keep the arrival details and route available offline even after the eSIM is working. Before each driving day, check the next stop, the border requirements and the plan's destination list together.
Pre-departure checklist
- Every country on the route, including transit, is on the plan's destination list.
- The data allowance and validity match the length of the trip.
- A detour into Kosovo is covered by a separate plan or a package that lists Kosovo.
- The phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and the eSIM is installed over Wi-Fi.
- Roaming and data switching on the home SIM are checked.
- Cross-border permission and insurance for the motorhome are confirmed for every country.
- Maps, bookings, documents, the campsite entrance, the host's number and check-in instructions are saved offline.
- If you travel as a group, you have agreed where to meet if the connection drops.
