A writer born and raised in Hokkaido says she dislikes the cold. In winter she switches off the vehicle's heating at night, and in the morning the temperature inside is often below zero. She names nine items that help her sleep in these conditions.
What she recommends
- an electric blanket that also works as a mat without power;
- a portable power station built for cold conditions, such as the Jackery Portable Power Station 500 New or the BLUETTI Pioneer Na;
- an electric mat for targeted warmth;
- a domestic down duvet combined with Nitori's N-Warm duvet cover;
- a rechargeable heated eye mask;
- down trousers;
- disposable hand warmers;
- a silver reflective mat on the floor;
- a thermos with hot water prepared the evening before.
About 500 Wh is enough for a night of electric blanket use plus phone charging, but she recommends 700–1000 Wh per person per night for a margin. Her most important advice is not to take risks: in bad weather or poor health, a hotel is the better choice.
