In Germany, winter tires are mandatory for motorhomes based on weather conditions, not a fixed calendar period. For motorhomes up to 3.5 tons, passenger car rules apply; heavier vehicles fall under truck regulations. Since 2018, only tires with the Alpine symbol (mountain and snowflake) are permitted. Violations carry fines from 60 euros, penalty points, and risk of insurance denial in case of an accident.

This follows a proposal that would have affected vehicles towing a trailer or with a special loading device, impacting approximately 4,700 vehicles in Germany. The decision aims to reduce costs and legal uncertainty for private users, with industry associations calling for swift national implementation.

How to keep a motorhome cool in summer

Expert Dominic Vierneisel from Promobil magazine gave advice on cooling motorhomes in hot weather. Key measures include using external aluminum-coated thermal mats that reflect sunlight and roof vent fans for rapid air exchange. White body color reduces heat absorption, and an awning provides shade at the entrance. Running the air conditioner while away is discouraged due to noise and energy consumption.
