Greece clarifies motorhome parking rules, restoring appeal for camper tourism

Police on Mykonos arrested a 51-year-old Greek man in Ano Mera after discovering a cannabis plantation inside his motorhome. Officers seized 15 plants, 2 drying plants, 319 grams of raw marijuana, and cultivation equipment. The suspect has been taken to the Syros prosecutor's office.

The caravanning TV show 'We zijn er Bijna!' returns for a new season, this time touring mainland Greece and the Peloponnese peninsula. 42 participants will travel with caravans and motorhomes for six weeks, moving between campsites, starting in Croatia and passing through Serbia and North Macedonia. Marlijn Weerdenburg takes over as host from Martine van Os. The seven-episode series premieres on July 28 at 8:30 PM on NPO 1.

Since 2025, Greece has imposed restrictions on parking and camping for motorhomes and caravans. Overnight stays and long-term parking are now only allowed in organized campsites or designated areas. Fines for illegal parking range up to 300 euros with a 10-day license suspension, while unauthorized camping can lead to up to 3 years in prison.

On the evening of June 8, a motorhome and a car collided on the Thessaloniki–Moudania highway. Two people were injured and taken to hospital. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Greek authorities are increasing inspections for illegal camping outside organized sites. Violators face an administrative fine of €300 per person, tent, or vehicle, and in serious cases, criminal proceedings with possible imprisonment of up to six months. This week, two men were arrested on Skiathos for camping on a beach, reigniting debate over whether Greece should adopt a regulated model for responsible free camping.

Since January 2025, a new law in Greece restricts parking of motorhomes and caravans in public spaces. Violations can result in fines up to 300 euros and up to three months imprisonment. Parking in residential areas is limited to 24 hours for vehicles longer than 7.5 meters.
