Kia introduces all-wheel-drive variants of its EV3, EV4 and EV5, raising towing capacity to 1800 kg. The number of EVs suitable for caravan towing has grown from 3 to over 100 models in six years, with prices starting around €30,890.

The market for electric cars capable of towing caravans is expanding rapidly.

Kia's new AWD lineup

Kia has launched all-wheel-drive versions of the EV3, EV4 and EV5, equipped with an 81 kWh battery and 265 hp. Maximum braked towing capacity for all three models is now 1800 kg. Previously, the EV3 could tow only 300 or 1000 kg depending on the version, and the EV5 had a 1200 kg limit. The premium for AWD ranges from €2,500 to €3,000.

Broader market growth

According to a study by ACSI, the number of EV models with a minimum towing capacity of 1200 kg has increased from 3 to over 100 in six years. Towing a caravan typically cuts range by more than half.

Affordable options

The most budget-friendly models in 2026 include the Zeekr X, Lynk & Co 02, Volvo EX30 and Smart #1, with prices from €35,990 and towing capacities between 1200 and 1600 kg. Other sources list entry-level prices as low as €30,890. While the choice for caravan owners is growing fast, range reduction remains a key challenge.

Motor vehicle tax for campers to increase significantly in 2026: what you'll pay for a van camper, alcove, and (semi-)integrated models

The motor vehicle tax (MRB) for campers in the Netherlands will double in 2026, increasing from a 75% discount to a 50% discount compared to a standard passenger car. This results in substantial annual cost increases, for example, an estimated €1,032 more for a van camper with a weight of 2,900 kg. The higher costs are attributed to the vehicles' weight and, in many cases, heavily taxed diesel engines.
