Caravan roof hatch flies off on A9 near Greding: driver faces charges

Motorhome tourists are increasingly choosing Völklingen for short breaks, drawn by the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks. According to the site operator, about 90% of guests visit the ironworks, while the rest are transit travelers. In 2024–2025, 1,491 overnight stays were recorded at 12 pitches near the ironworks between June and September, mostly for one or two nights.

At a citizen dialogue on July 16 in Freilassing, residents discussed potential motorhome parking sites. A proposal to create 5–8 spaces near the outdoor pool for €60,000–80,000 was criticized by one attendee, who suggested the Lobmayr parking lot instead. Mayor Markus Hiebl rejected that idea, citing a state subsidy that requires the lot to remain a Park-and-Ride facility for commuters. Other suggestions, including the Lokwelt site, were also dismissed.

According to a survey by Camping-Car Park, campsite bookings are becoming increasingly spontaneous and short-term. Holidays in motorhomes, tents or camper vans are becoming more flexible, both in route planning and pitch booking. Survey data show how campers plan their vacations and what demands they place on pitches.

Autobild magazine has begun a long-term test of the Hobby Ontour T 700 FH semi-integrated motorhome. At the Contidrom test track, handling, brakes and ESP were evaluated. The model features an L-shaped lounge, corner kitchen, separate bathroom and a drop-down bed, providing sleeping space for four.

Since July 21, 2026, an original 1988 East German caravan 'QEK-Junior' has been on display at the Museum Petersberg. The exhibit is part of the 'Mobilität im Wandel' show, which features toy cars and technology from the late 19th century. Owner Helmut Marx also plans to bring a DeLorean from the film 'Back to the Future' for a weekend. The museum is open daily except Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00.

In Lippstadt, Germany, police stopped a motorhome that was missing all its windows, including the windshield. The driver was also not wearing a seatbelt. An inspection revealed numerous other defects, and the vehicle was deemed a 'pile of scrap metal on wheels.' It was impounded, and an administrative offense procedure was initiated. The motorhome turned out to be a rare Bawemo Streamliner or Bawemo 630, a model produced from the 1970s to the 1990s, which in good condition can fetch up to €50,000.
