The driver of a van towing the caravan, a family from Bavaria, ignored a ban on vehicles with trailers imposed due to storm warnings. The driver claims he did not see the warning signs. The coupling prevented the caravan from falling; the driver also says the weight of two motorcycles in the van added stability.
The rescue operation took about 1.5 hours, during which the bridge was fully closed, causing a multi-kilometer traffic jam. No injuries were reported, but the driver suffered psychological trauma. Many passing motorists filmed the incident instead of helping, drawing online criticism.
