In Brief

On the evening of May 1, 2026, a motorhome caught fire on the RD 919 road in Alsace; traffic was blocked, no injuries. Earlier, on March 25, a motorhome and a car burned in a supermarket parking lot in Occitanie, possibly due to a gas cylinder explosion.

Two motorhome fires have occurred in France. The first incident took place on the evening of May 1, 2026, on the RD 919 road between Oermingen and Herbitzheim (Alsace). A motorhome caught fire; two fire engines and a barrier vehicle were used to extinguish it. Traffic was completely blocked, with no injuries reported.

The second fire occurred on March 25 in Bessan (Occitanie) in a supermarket parking lot. The fire destroyed a motorhome and a passenger car. Preliminary reports suggest a gas cylinder explosion as a possible cause. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles were completely burned.

Converting a caravan into a guest room risks a heavy fine

Using a caravan as a permanent guest room on a property may be classified as illegal construction. Under French law, if the caravan loses mobility (wheels removed, placed on a concrete base) and is used for more than three months a year, it is treated as a building. The fine for such a violation can reach €90,000, and the court may order demolition with a daily penalty of up to €500 for non-compliance.
