France has seen a wave of mass caravan placements by traveler communities on private and agricultural land.
In Perrignier (Haute-Savoie), 220 caravans occupied six hectares of pasture belonging to farmer Édouard Roche. The farmer has endured such invasions since 1992, but the current number is a record in 30 years. Mayor Noël Mathian has initiated an eviction procedure, but due to processing times, the caravans could remain for two weeks.
In Plonéour-Lanvern (Finistère), about 40 caravans set up on private land in Hellès. Some came from Île-Tudy, others from Poulan-sur-Mer. Travelers informed the owner and locals that their stay would last about three weeks. Gendarmes arrived to document the occupation, which proceeded without incidents.
In Lorraine, the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle issued an order allowing a group of travelers to place 250 caravans on a temporary site at the Chanteux-Croismare aerodrome near Lunéville. Previously, 250 caravans had illegally occupied private farmland in the commune of Mex. The permit is valid until August 3, 2026, and provides for a deviation from the usual capacity of 150 caravans.
