In Brief

In two communes of the Corrèze department, travellers have occupied municipal stadiums. In Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche, about 50 caravans set up; the mayor filed a complaint. In Saint-Germain-Lespinasse, about a hundred; the mayor tolerates the occupation but demands departure by the end of the week.

Two cases of mass caravan occupation of municipal sports facilities have been reported in the Corrèze department of France.

In Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche, on the evening of 24 May, about 50 caravans occupied areas near the football stadium. Mayor Eddy Marcos called it an illegal intrusion and filed a complaint. Another 100 caravans are expected to arrive. Residents claim they notified authorities of their arrival as early as winter but received no response.

In Saint-Germain-Lespinasse, since Sunday 24 May, the football field has been occupied by about a hundred caravans. Mayor Christophe Loppin stated that the municipality "tolerates this placement" and tried to offer an alternative — a site in Mably with 82 spaces — but the travellers refused due to its unsatisfactory condition. According to the mayor's office, the caravans must leave the commune by the end of the week.

Converting a caravan into a guest room risks a heavy fine

Using a caravan as a permanent guest room on a property may be classified as illegal construction. Under French law, if the caravan loses mobility (wheels removed, placed on a concrete base) and is used for more than three months a year, it is treated as a building. The fine for such a violation can reach €90,000, and the court may order demolition with a daily penalty of up to €500 for non-compliance.
