On Thursday evening a storm hit southern Lithuania, damaging forests and endangering holidaymakers. On Friday morning employees of the State Forest Enterprise (SFE) rushed to a campsite at Lake Veisiejai where campers were cut off by fallen and broken trees. According to preliminary data, the storm felled and broke about 8,000 cubic metres of timber in southern Lithuanian forests, with pine forests in Druskininkai and Varėna forest districts suffering the most damage. Clean-up work continues and the SFE urges people to avoid the worst-affected forests.
