Several French towns have reported illegal encampments of caravans on sports facilities, leading to event cancellations and infrastructure damage.
Castres (Tarn)
About 100 caravans illegally occupied the Bordes-Basses sports complex, damaging fences and power supply. The mayor filed a complaint and cut off water and electricity. A rugby tournament for 700 children scheduled for June 13 is likely cancelled due to field damage.
Bruges (Gironde)
Around 130 caravans settled on the football pitches of the Dojère complex. Mayor Frédéric Giraud said this will disrupt sports for club members, schoolchildren and leisure program participants, and damage lawns restored in summer 2025. The town hall initiated eviction proceedings via the prefect.
Étrembières, Neydens, Saint-Julien (May 2026)
On May 17, a group of about 50 caravans left the A40 rest area in Étrembières after eviction proceedings began. The same day they tried to occupy a private field in Neydens, but owners and a local deputy prevented it; the deputy received death threats. By evening, about 60 caravans headed to an unused field in Saint-Julien.
Montbéliard (May 2026)
On May 17, dozens of caravans illegally occupied the "Banane" sports field behind the Roselière district. The installation occurred the day before, on May 16. Local authorities are expected to react, possibly with eviction proceedings.
