North Yorkshire Council has approved a permanent ban on overnight parking of campervans and motorhomes on a stretch of coast from Scarborough's North Bay to Sandsend. The restrictions, first introduced as a trial in November 2024, are in force from 23:00 to 7:00 in North Bay, Scarborough and on the A174 south of Sandsend village.
The ban was prompted by complaints about congestion, litter, anti-social behaviour and vehicles occupying multiple parking bays. Over 3,000 responses were received during consultation, with most campervan owners opposing the move while local councillors supported it. Campaign group CAMpRA said such measures hinder sustainable tourism.
The council has also begun consultation on further restrictions in key residential areas of Scarborough.
