How to read the plate

EU band
The blue band with the EU flag and the country code M.
No region code
You cannot tell the region from this country's plates.
Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.

A Maltese plate is three letters and three digits (CQZ 774), issued in sequence across the country. On the left is the blue EU band with the letter M. No region is shown: even the island of Gozo has no separate code, except for taxis (TAXI 001M for Malta, TAXI 001G for Gozo).

Region codes

Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.

History

The current format has been in use since 1995. Earlier Maltese formats had no region codes either.
