How to read the plate
A Belarusian plate reads left to right: the flag and BY, four digits, two series letters and, after a hyphen, the region digit — for example 8682 АХ-3. Digits 1–6 are the regions in alphabetical order (1 is Brest, 3 is Gomel), 7 and 8 are Minsk. Only Cyrillic letters that look like Latin ones are used: А, В, Е, І, К, М, Н, О, Р, С, Т, Х.

History
The current pattern dates from 2004 under STB 914-99. Before that the region was the first series letter: on the 2000–2004 plates (1234 АВС) and the 1992–2000 plates (1234 АВ) — M and K, for example, meant Minsk. The old plates remain valid. Code 8 was first used on transit plates and is now Minsk's second code.
