How to read the plate
A Belgian plate has ruby-red characters and border on white, with the blue EU band and the letter B on the left. The format is a digit, three letters and three digits separated by hyphens: 1-ABC-123; for ordinary cars the first digit is 1 or 2. No region is shown: plates are issued centrally by the DIV, and the number belongs to the owner, not to the car.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
Belgium has never had regional codes. The earlier formats — the plates of 1951–1973, ABC-123 and 123-ABC (1973–2008), then 1-ABC-123 (2008–2010) — did not indicate a place either. The current design has been in use since 16 November 2010.
