How to read the plate
A Croatian plate starts with two letters for the town at the centre of the registration area: ZG for Zagreb, ST for Split, RI for Rijeka, OS for Osijek; there are 34 codes, some with diacritics (ČK, KŽ, PŽ, ŠI, VŽ, ŽU). Next come the chequered Croatian coat of arms, 3–4 digits, a dash and 1–2 letters (ZD 608-EC is Zadar). The areas do not match the counties: one county can have several codes. Thin red and blue lines run along the top and bottom edges.

History
The current system dates from 1992; the blue EU band was added on 4 July 2016. Until 1991 Yugoslav plates were used, with codes of the same towns and a red star. The codes PS (Podravska Slatina) and SP (Slavonska Požega) are no longer issued: after the towns were renamed they were replaced by SL and PŽ. A 2015 plan to give each of the 128 towns its own code was cancelled in 2016.
