AL is the international code of the country of registration.

Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.
Since 16 February 2011 Albanian plates have been nationwide and show no region: two letters, three digits and two letters (AB 115 XX), laid out like Italian plates. There are blue fields at both ends: on the left the double-headed eagle and AL, on the right a ring for the year sticker. On the old 1993–2011 plates, which are still valid, the first two letters are the code of one of 36 districts (TR 1234 A is Tirana).

History
In 1993–2011 plates had the format «TR 1234 A» with a district (rreth) code; such plates are still in circulation. The districts themselves were later abolished, and the country is now divided into 12 counties (qark). In 1958–1993 district initials were put on lorries.
