How to read the plate
An Austrian plate reads left to right: the blue EU band with A, then one or two letters of the district (W for Vienna, GB for Gröbming), the coat of arms of the federal state, and digits and letters — the number itself. Narrow red-white-red stripes run along the top and bottom. The first letters show at once where the car comes from; for a fee you can choose your own combination after the district code.

History
White plates with district codes have been issued since 1990; until 1989 plates were white on black and showed only the federal state. After districts were merged in 2012–2017, the codes FB, FF, HB, JU, KF, MZ, RA and WU are no longer issued, but cars with them are still on the road.
