Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.
Since 2023 a Slovak plate shows no region: two letters, the coat of arms, three digits and two letters (AA 328AD) form a nationwide series, and the number stays with the car. Most cars on the road, however, still carry 1997–2022 plates, where the first two letters are the district (okres) code: BA for Bratislava, KE for Košice, ZA for Žilina. When a big city's code ran out it got a new one: Bratislava went from BA to BL and then BT. The EL and EV series are issued to electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

History
The 1997–2022 district codes matched the country's 79 districts; they stopped being issued on 31 December 2022, but such plates remain valid. Some reserve district codes (e.g. BC, KC, NI, TA) were never actually issued. Before 1997 Czechoslovak plates carried the codes of the 38 Slovak districts of that time — they are rare today.
