How to read the plate
A Liechtenstein plate has white characters on black: the letters FL, the lesser state arms and a serial number, usually of five digits (up to six). No region is shown: the country has 11 municipalities, but they have no codes. The number belongs to the owner, not to the car.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
From 1906 to 1915 Liechtenstein cars used Austrian plates, and from 1915 to 1924 the country's own plates without letters. The letters FL appeared in 1925 and the current design with the lesser arms in 1961–1972. The country has never had regional codes.
