Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.
A Czech plate has seven characters: a digit, the region letter, a digit or letter and, after a space, four digits (1BA 3236). The region is the second character: A for Prague, S for Central Bohemia, B for South Moravia, T for Moravia-Silesia and so on, 14 letters in all. It shows the region of first registration and does not change when the owner moves. Between the groups are two circles for the inspection and emissions stickers; the letters G, O, Q and W are not used.

History
Region letters were introduced in 2001 and the blue EU band in 2004. From 1960 to 2001 Czechoslovak plates carried a two-letter district code (BE for Beroun, BM/BS/BZ for Brno), while Prague had the letter A plus a series; these plates are still valid and can be seen on older cars. The Gottwaldov codes GT and GV were replaced by ZL in 1990, when the town got back the name Zlín.
