How to read the plate
Since 1 July 2022 a Hungarian plate has four letters and three digits: two letters, the coat of arms, two more letters, a dash and the digits (AA AB-123). No region is shown: series are issued in turn for the whole country. The first two letters are either both vowels or both consonants; Q is not used.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
From 1990 to 2022 plates had three letters and three digits (ABC-123) and were also issued in nationwide series. In 1958–1990 two letters and four digits pointed to the type of vehicle or owner, not to a region. In the 1990s blocks of series were shared out among the counties, but no system ever tied letters to a region for good.
