How to read the plate
A Slovenian plate starts with the two-letter code of the registration area: LJ for Ljubljana, MB for Maribor, CE for Celje, KP for Koper, 11 areas in all. After the code comes the coat of arms of the municipality whose administrative unit issued the plate, then five characters with a dash (LJ 60-CFB, KR P7-944). The plate has a green border. The areas match neither the regions nor the municipalities; for personalised plates any code can be chosen, and the arms sticker is sold separately, so it does not always match the place of registration.

History
Eight codes — CE, GO, KP, KR, LJ, MB, MS, NM — come from Yugoslav plates, where they stood next to a red star; after independence in 1991 KK, PO and SG were added. The current look with the blue EU band appeared in 2004–2008. Slovenia has no abolished codes.
