How to read the plate
A Swiss plate consists of the two-letter canton code, a dot and a serial number of 1–6 digits: ZH·272577 is the canton of Zurich. The rear plate carries the Swiss coat of arms on the left and the canton's arms on the right; the front plate is shorter and has no arms. The number belongs to the owner and moves from car to car. The code AI (Appenzell Innerrhoden) is common on rental cars, so it does not necessarily mean a local vehicle.

History
Canton letter codes have been used on plates since 1933. From 1905 to 1933 each canton had its own block of numbers without letters (e.g. Zurich 1–1000, Bern 1001–2200). The federal series A (administration) and P (PTT post and SBB railways, until 2003) were abolished.
