Japanese convenience store chain Lawson is expanding its car sleeping (차박) service at the parking lots of its stores. From July 17, 2025, the service will be available at approximately 30 stores in Saitama, Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures. The company plans to increase the number of participating stores from 7 to about 70 by fiscal 2026.
The cost is 2500 yen per night, roughly nine times cheaper than the average hotel room price in Japan (21,795 yen in May). Payment requires a credit card prepayment and booking via the RV Park website. The service is aimed at camper and motorhome owners and includes use of the restroom, charging of portable batteries, and disposal of trash purchased at the store.
During a 10-month pilot project in Chiba Prefecture, several hundred bookings were recorded, and occupancy exceeded 90% during holiday periods.
