In Brief

Christchurch City Council approved a 10-year land lease in New Brighton for a motorhome park with 100 spaces. The project, backed by the Avon River committee, now awaits building consent.

A new motorhome park in Christchurch's earthquake-damaged red zone has been approved. The city council agreed to lease land in New Brighton to the Motorhome Association for 10 years. The park will accommodate 100 motorhomes, with a maximum stay of 10 days within any 30-day period.

The Avon River Recovery Committee unanimously supported the preliminary application, including Mayor Phil Mauger. The decision comes as about 60 homeless people are being evicted from a makeshift camp across the river, with a deadline to leave by 28 February 2027.

The association must provide site usage details and conduct contamination testing. The project now needs building consent. The campground is expected to open in about a year.

New motorhome park proposed on New Brighton red zone land

The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) has applied to Christchurch City Council for a 10-year transitional lease of 5,000–10,000 sq m at 60–80 Owles Terrace, New Brighton, to accommodate up to 100 motorhomes and caravans. The site is on vacant red zoned land, previously affected by earthquakes. Basic amenities would include rubbish bins and potable water, with a possible wastewater dump station. The park would be restricted to NZMCA members in certified self-contained motorhomes and caravans, with a maximum stay of 10 days per 30-day period. Opening is optimistically targeted for summer 2026–2027, but more realistically late 2027 if resource consent is required.

Caravan dwellers temporarily rehoused after park incident

Families forced to evacuate their caravans due to a fire at Oaks caravan park near Kingston Bagpuize have been given temporary emergency accommodation. The accidental fire, believed to have started from a barbecue, occurred on the evening of July 12, with 125 firefighters called to tackle the blaze. Damage to the electricity system rendered the park unsafe, and 12 households were rehoused by Vale of White Horse District Council.

Student nurse lives in caravan during two-month placement

Nursing graduate Ella Hofman from Foxton had to live in a caravan for nine weeks because her final clinical placement was in Whanganui, a two-hour drive away. She fell ill due to the cold and was still unwell while sitting her state nursing exam. Hofman is one of 964 nurses graduating this month competing for 428 new graduate roles at Te Whatu Ora. NZNO student co-leader Poihaere Whare said clinical placements are a huge logistical and financial challenge, forcing students to stay in camper vans or sleep in cars.
