Kate and Daniel O'Phalen from Brooklyn planned to spend the summer of 2020 in Maine, but after three months of traveling they decided not to return to New York. In 2021, they bought a used American toy hauler travel trailer for $18,000 and renovated it for $7,000, including $5,000 on interior and cosmetic changes and $600 on a washing machine. The trailer, about 400 square feet, became the permanent home for a family of five and their dog. Since early 2022, they have lived in it full-time, moving every two to three weeks, visiting 53 of 66 US national parks, 11 Canadian provinces, and spending six months in Mexico. The family bought about an acre of land outside Bend, Oregon, to build a house, but has no plans to stop traveling yet.
