The 'Village étape' network includes 79 communes across 10 French regions, marked by dedicated road signs with motorhome and caravan pictograms. The label originated in the 1990s in Limousin as an alternative to standard motorway service areas. To qualify, a commune must be within 5 km of a major road, have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, and offer essential services: shops, restaurants, accommodation, and parking. The network reports an average visitor spend of €135 and a satisfaction score of 9/10.
