As hotel prices rise in Japan, demand is growing for campers based on kei cars (small light vehicles). These vehicles can accommodate up to four people and cost around 3–4 million yen, about half the price of standard campers.
Overall camper sales reached 112.7 billion yen two years ago. Owners highlight the convenience for daily use, the ability to park in ordinary spaces, and the option to sleep on the road without booking a hotel. Campers are also seen as a preparation for natural disasters.
