Isle of Skye faces campervan waste crisis as locals report human feces

Over 30,000 motorhomes visit the Scottish Highlands each year, with the Isle of Skye being a mandatory stop for most. Locals, whose economy depends on tourism, face landscape pollution from litter and fecal waste left by irresponsible visitors.

Kent County Council issued 19 notices to vacate to owners of caravans, camper vans, and motorhomes parked on Western Undercliff in Ramsgate. The action followed complaints about long-term parking and unsanitary conditions, including waste discharge. Local councillors propose introducing paid overnight parking with time limits and basic facilities to address the issue while supporting tourism.

A restored vintage Airstream trailer from 1973 is available for rent in Dull, Perth and Kinross. The property is a 10-minute drive from Loch Tay and 30 minutes from Loch Lomond. It features a king-size bed, kitchenette, shower, and an outdoor patio with hot tub and BBQ. Minimum stay is two nights, maximum 28 days.

Plassey Holiday Park in Wrexham, Wales, has been ranked among the top 150 campsites in the UK by Campsites.co.uk. The 247-acre site overlooks the Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It holds a 4.84-star rating, with 98% of guests recommending it. Amenities include an indoor pool, a 9-hole golf course, an adventure playground, a pub, and a retail village.

Motorhomes have been included in the UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) basket of goods for the first time, reflecting increased consumer spending on touring holidays. Demand for motorhomes and campervans on Gumtree has risen by 133% since the start of the year. A Safeguard survey found that 40% of drivers were unaware that a separate insurance policy is legally required for a motorhome.

Brownhills Motorhomes, the UK's largest single-site motorhome retailer, reported a pre-tax loss of £961,000 for the year to September 30, 2025, compared with a profit of £1.12m the previous year. Directors cited an industry-wide oversupply of new motorhomes following the surge in demand during the post-pandemic period.
