Bureaucracy
To move around by motorhome, foreigners require a special five-day permit. It cannot be obtained online — only at certain police stations. The process took about three hours at night using Google Translate.
Restrictions
Motorhome access to the city is limited by ring roads and time intervals, so the family left the vehicle on the outskirts and used the metro. Visiting the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square required advance booking several days ahead. The Forbidden City is paid, the square is free. According to Oana Hajoș, many halls of the Forbidden City are closed, although pre-trip information indicated they could be visited.
