Thermal screen for motorhome can cost over 500 euros, but the main choice is not in the price

Chinese motorhomes advertised on social media for €18,800 attract buyers in the Netherlands, where camper prices have reached record highs. However, registration in the country adds transport costs, import duties, VAT and BPM tax, while individual RDW inspection can cost thousands of euros. Major Chinese manufacturers are beginning to enter the European market, but their models are adapted to local requirements and carry corresponding price tags.

Renting a motorhome can lead to unexpected expenses. The Dutch Caravan Club (NKC) warns that advertised prices often exclude deductibles, deposits, mileage limits, and extra equipment. The average deductible is around €1,000, and exceeding a weekly limit of 1,500–1,750 km costs €0.25–0.35 per extra kilometer. Renters must also consider overnight parking rules, daily maintenance of water and electrical systems, and the challenges of driving a large vehicle.

Key risks when buying a motorhome include exceeding the permissible weight (up to 3,500 kg for standard driving license B), hidden water damage, and tax changes. Since January 1, 2026, the Netherlands has abolished the reduced quarterly rate for vehicle tax, replacing it with a more expensive half-rate. It is recommended to conduct an independent moisture check, weigh the vehicle, and inspect the living area separately, as the regular MOT (APK) does not cover gas, electrical, or water systems.
