In Brief

Paderborn authorities do not support a tiny house settlement like Bielefeld's, while a project in Dormagen may fail due to lack of an investor

Two tiny house settlement projects in Germany face different challenges.

Paderborn: rejection of the idea

Paderborn authorities do not plan to build a tiny house settlement similar to the one in Bielefeld. Permits for two such houses have already been issued, but creating an entire settlement is not supported.

Dormagen: future uncertain

The planned settlement of six tiny houses in Kaarst-Holzbüttgen may not materialize due to the lack of an investor. The city administration intends to develop proposals for further implementation in the coming weeks, aiming to create additional housing to address the apartment shortage.

Students build tiny house to tackle space shortage

Eighth-graders at a community school in Mölln, Schleswig-Holstein, are building a mobile tiny house to serve as a 'green classroom' for outdoor learning. The project addresses a lack of space at the school: instead of installing containers, students are constructing a wooden building of about 20 sq m. Construction began at the start of the school year, led by a teacher who is a trained carpenter, with one hour per week allocated. Funding of €5,000 was provided by the Nordmetall foundation, with additional support from local businesses. Exterior work is expected to be completed by summer 2026, interior work in the following school year, and the classroom is set to open in summer 2027.

Green Light for Tiny House Settlement in Hoppingen

The Harburg city council approved a development plan for a 12,800 m² plot in the Hoppingen district to build 20 tiny houses. An investor from Donauwörth abandoned the original multi-family building plan due to rising construction costs. The fully furnished houses, each about 40 m², will feature solar panels and shared battery storage for near energy self-sufficiency. Plots range from 350 to 450 m², each requiring a tree, with building size capped at 64 m².

Fate of homeless camper in Landsberg stirs public emotion

Residents of Landsberg are actively discussing the story of Wolfgang Vogl, who was forced to leave the parking lot at Waitzinger Wiese after an extended stay. A survey of police stations in Landsberg and Dießen found no significant issues with long-term campers, but finding a place for permanent residence in a motorhome is difficult. At campsites in Pitzling and Utting, all 160 and 165 long-term pitches are occupied, with waiting lists of 15 and 70 people respectively. According to traffic regulations, a stationary inhabited vehicle is not considered a road user, and only one night is allowed to restore driving fitness.
