The rise of car camping using converted electric vehicles in China has led to conflicts over parking and waste. Authorities in Yunnan are introducing rules: in Mengzi, cooking with open fire and unauthorized utility connections are banned from January 2025; in Ruili, overnight stays are only allowed in designated areas from December 2025. In Lingchuan County, Shanxi Province, a vacant parking lot was converted into a campsite with showers and water refill points. In the first half of 2024, Yunnan recorded 299,650 long-stay tourists, up 6.9% year-on-year.
