Motorhome tourism in Normandy continues to grow. Data from operator Camping-Car Park shows 262,000 overnight stays in the region in 2025, up 28% compared to 2024.

Most popular sites

  • Mont-Saint-Michel — 72,362 stays
  • Grandcamp-Maisy — about 17,000 stays
  • Caen — 14,335 stays

The increase is attributed to the region's tourist appeal (D-Day beaches, cliffs, Mont-Saint-Michel) and a high concentration of motorhome owners in Normandy.

Converting a caravan into a guest room risks a heavy fine

Using a caravan as a permanent guest room on a property may be classified as illegal construction. Under French law, if the caravan loses mobility (wheels removed, placed on a concrete base) and is used for more than three months a year, it is treated as a building. The fine for such a violation can reach €90,000, and the court may order demolition with a daily penalty of up to €500 for non-compliance.
