The 1914 Ford Model T Motor Caravan is regarded as the oldest known surviving motorhome. It was built to a custom order for the wealthy British Bentall family shortly before the outbreak of World War I. British firm Baico lengthened and reinforced the standard Model T chassis, while Dunton of Reading constructed the wooden living body. The interior includes four berths, a folding table, a cast-iron stove, a large wardrobe and a letterbox. Power comes from a 2.9-litre four-cylinder engine producing 20 hp and about 112 Nm, paired with a two-speed planetary transmission. Due to the weight of the body, the realistic cruising speed was barely 40 km/h.
