Law firm Dr. Stoll & Sauer has filed the first lawsuits against Volkswagen over the release of harmful substances in the VW Grand California. The lawsuits concern models with a fiberglass roof (GFK) produced from April 2019 to June 2022.

According to the plaintiffs, benzene, styrene, formaldehyde and xylenes were detected inside the vehicle. Measured concentrations exceed the guideline values of the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt): benzene up to 159.1 µg/m³ (guideline 4.5 µg/m³), styrene up to 4535.6 µg/m³ (hazard threshold 300 µg/m³).

The lawsuits are based on §§ 826 and 823 of the German Civil Code (BGB). The plaintiffs demand rescission of the purchase contract and compensation for future material and non-material damages.
