A large fire completely destroyed a motorhome and caravan dealership in Leça da Palmeira (Matosinhos municipality, Porto district), near the Mar Shopping center. The fire started around midnight on June 23, 2026. Witnesses reported several explosions as flames spread.
According to preliminary investigations by the Judicial Police, the cause may have been a sky lantern (balão de S. João) released during the São João festivities. Dealer director Amélia Amil reported 40 to 45 vehicles damaged; other sources indicate 35 vehicles were completely burned. Losses are estimated at €800,000–€900,000.
Between 43 and 48 firefighters with 12 vehicles from several brigades fought the blaze. Residents of two nearby houses were evacuated due to explosions and fire spread risk. Traffic on the A28 highway and Rua Veloso Salgado was blocked. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
