On Saturday, August 8, around 5:30 PM on the A2 motorway near Mezzovico (Ticino), a car collided with a camper traveling ahead. According to cantonal police, a 49-year-old Kosovo citizen residing in the canton of Aargau was driving the car and caused the collision for reasons yet to be determined. The car also carried a 45-year-old woman and two minors, all Kosovo citizens.
The camper, driven by a 50-year-old Spanish citizen, left the road and came to rest on an embankment behind the guardrail. All seven people were taken to hospital: the car driver suffered life-threatening injuries, the camper driver serious injuries, and the others minor injuries. According to Rescue Media, the injured were taken to hospitals in Lugano and Bellinzona.
Northbound traffic between the Dosso di Taverne tunnel and Rivera was partially closed until 11:00 PM, causing a queue back to Lugano. Three ambulances, Croce Verde rescuers, SAM, and firefighters were on site. Police are investigating the circumstances.
