26th Shanghai International RV and Camping Expo to be held May 22–24, 2026

The China Association of Automotive Journalists proposed leveraging the RV segment to stimulate automotive culture and consumption in Zhengzhou, which was selected as a pilot city for auto circulation reform. According to the association, China registers about 10,000 motorhomes annually, with a total fleet of 300,000 units — far below the US market (50,000 annual sales, 13 million units). The expert noted that developing camping infrastructure and easing RV usage rules could drive tourism and related industries.

In 2025, China registered 23,616 RVs, up 24.5% year-on-year. Self-propelled motorhomes accounted for 83.13% of the market (19,632 units). The SAIC Maxus V90 held a 28.5% market share, driven by its B-class flexibility (length under 6 m, height under 3 m, C1 license, 6-year inspection exemption). It offers a 2.0T diesel (130 kW, 420 N·m) or plug-in hybrid (total 280 kW, 30 kWh battery). The factory provides official conversion documentation for legal modifications.

From March 1, 2026, a new Chinese standard prohibits using beds and showers in moving motorhomes. At speeds above 5 km/h, the system automatically locks the shower and warns occupants to leave the sleeping area. Between 2022 and 2024, 183 accidents occurred due to using living facilities while driving, causing 47 severe injuries and 12 deaths. Manufacturers like Yutong and SAIC Maxus are developing safety systems, and 500 new service area hookups will be added by 2026.

The author drove an RV to Mount Hengshan in Shanxi province, detailing routes, campsites, and tips. The official RV camp at the mountain base offers 30 free parking spots, charging stations, water, and sewage disposal for 80 yuan per night. Free wild campsites near Xuankong Temple and the back mountain are also mentioned, but without facilities. Booking 3 days ahead is advised during peak season.

China's Ministry of Commerce released a list of pilot cities for automotive consumption reform. Yangzhou (Jiangsu province) was designated to focus on RV camping development. Other cities received different reform directions.

On June 23, 2025, China's Ministry of Commerce and eight other agencies released a notice outlining 17 measures to stimulate the automotive aftermarket. The policies cover vehicle modification, RV camping, classic cars, repair and insurance services, motorsports, and car rental. Key provisions include streamlining RV campsite approvals, designating RV parking spaces, and promoting eco-friendly, smart, and lightweight RV manufacturing.
