Caravan park expansion and leisure hub plan rejected

South Cambridgeshire District Council conducted a visit on 10 June 2026 to the Gypsy and Traveller site at Smithy Fen, Cottenham, inspecting approximately 70 caravans and speaking with residents. The action aims to verify compliance with planning conditions and the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960, which covers spacing, water supply, drainage, fire safety, and electrical systems. Findings will be reviewed, and any breaches in planning, licensing, or council tax will be addressed through legal processes.

A cabinet report recommends proceeding with phase one, which includes a site office and play area, and submitting a planning application. The council's Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment for 2022–2027 identified a need for 22 additional pitches by 2027 and five more by 2037. If approved, the expansion will be funded through Welsh Government grants or the existing affordable housing budget.
