An estimated 34,000 homeless people in California live in vehicles, half of them in motorhomes, converted buses, or travel trailers. Since January 2025, a new law in Los Angeles and Alameda counties allows authorities to quickly demolish oversize vehicles worth up to $4,000 if the owner cannot move them without a tow truck. Advocates and researchers say authorities are systematically displacing RV dwellers without providing alternative housing, with wait times for case workers reaching two to three months.
