Palo Alto City Council approved a pilot program that allows people living in RVs to apply for short-term parking permits in designated city locations.
The council voted to allow RV parking on two edges of town — Coyote Hill Road and Embarcadero Road — rejecting a more controversial proposal to restrict them near businesses and residential areas. Permits will cover less than half of the 130 RVs. The council also rejected a plan to limit parking in the 22 busiest neighborhoods.
Residents expressed dissatisfaction with the insufficient measures, and some are considering a citizen initiative for a full ban. The permit program includes requirements for insurance, signing an agreement, and a monthly fee of $15. According to San José Spotlight, the program will accommodate about three dozen vehicles and cost about $400,000 in its first year. Participants must undergo a case management program aimed at transitioning to permanent housing.
