Rise in traveller caravans
Statistics show a significant increase in the number of traveller caravans in some areas of England over two years. In the Buckinghamshire Council area, numbers rose by 60% from 650 in 2023 to 1,210 in 2025. In Kirklees, West Yorkshire, the increase was 136%. This is linked to a rise in unauthorised encampments and natural population growth on existing sites. Authorities in Buckinghamshire have obtained an injunction against illegal caravan placement on land at Ashley Green and say they will use all legal means against unauthorised land development.
Large Essex caravan park
Drone images have revealed the scale of the Buckles Lane caravan park in South Ockendon, Essex, considered one of the largest traveller sites in Europe. Established in 1980 as winter quarters for showmen, the site now houses over 1,000 people. The community has expanded and includes residents who reportedly commute to work in London. Earlier this year, resident Thomas McKenna was sentenced to 16 years in prison for possessing firearms and explosives.
Holiday village expansion
Haven Leisure has applied to add 97 static caravans to Orchards Holiday Village in St Osyth, Clacton. This would increase the total number to over 1,200 (an 8% rise). Plans also include relocating the golf club building and upgrading the fishing lake. The applicant cites the need to meet demand and support the local economy. A decision will be made by Tendring Council.
