In Brief

The Camping-Car Park site in Autun, open since November 2025, entered the top 10 of 800 European sites after five months. Meanwhile, illegal caravan camps were reported in Saint-Lattier and Vestric-et-Candiac, and a motorhome area project in Lignol sparked debate.

Success in Autun

On 19 May 2026, Camping-Car Park officially opened its motorhome site in Autun (France) on rue de la Maladière, operational since November 2025. In the first five months of 2026, the site showed high occupancy: by 15 May, over 1,728 overnight stays were recorded against a target of 1,835. This placed it in the top 10 among 800 sites across Europe. The company invested around €250,000; the city receives a fixed annual fee of €3,000 plus a variable portion up to €65,000. The site offers Wi-Fi, secure barriers, and a landscaped pedestrian area. User rating averages 4.5/5. The economic impact reached about €76,000, with a forecast of €246,000 per year.

Illegal camps and disputes

In Saint-Lattier, around 15 caravans of travelling community members illegally set up on the training field of the municipal stadium. Local authorities and gendarmerie negotiated; the temporary residents agreed to leave within two weeks and cause no damage. In Vestric-et-Candiac (Gard), 30 minutes from Nîmes, another illegal traveller camp appeared. Mayor Daniel Fischot stated the group's departure is scheduled for the following week. In Lignol (Morbihan), the municipal council on 18 May 2026 discussed projects for a motorhome area and the Pont-Robin school, which caused disagreements.

Converting a caravan into a guest room risks a heavy fine

Using a caravan as a permanent guest room on a property may be classified as illegal construction. Under French law, if the caravan loses mobility (wheels removed, placed on a concrete base) and is used for more than three months a year, it is treated as a building. The fine for such a violation can reach €90,000, and the court may order demolition with a daily penalty of up to €500 for non-compliance.
