Malaysia: Over 1,450 RVs registered, MOT confirms legality

Malaysia's Ministry of Transport (MOT) stated that more than 1,450 recreational vehicles (RVs), including motorhomes, caravans and campervans, have been registered for private use in the country. The ministry confirmed that RVs are legal vehicles and can be registered and licensed by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The government encourages the RV industry as a high-potential niche segment contributing to the automotive chain and domestic tourism. Regarding hire-purchase facilities, MOT noted that vehicle financing remains subject to commercial assessment by banks under the Hire-Purchase Act 1967 (amended 2025).

Malaysian Deputy PM visits Bernama motorhome at ETCon26

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof toured the Bernama motorhome displayed at the Energy Transition Conference 2026 (ETCon26) in Kuala Lumpur. The motorhome, named Bernama Mobile Studio, was launched a year ago to enable live interviews in the field. It is the first media vehicle in Malaysia to use a recreational vehicle for reporting, powered by electric batteries. The three-day conference attracted about 4,000 participants from over 60 countries.

Chery launches Lepas in Europe: first is a large hybrid SUV

Chery has introduced a new sub-brand Lepas in the UK. The first model is the plug-in hybrid SUV Lepas L8, arriving in showrooms in Q3 2026. It features a 1.5L turbo petrol engine, an electric motor, and an 18 kWh battery, with an electric-only range of up to 89 km. Later, the mid-size L6 (with petrol, hybrid, and full EV versions) and the compact L4 (competing with Volvo EX30 and BMW iX1) will follow. Prices have not been announced.

Caravan to Hoa Thinh: tourists witness post-flood recovery

On April 25, the Hoa Thinh Charity Club organized a caravan program 'Hoa Thinh — Bunga Teratai Memanggil' with 30 private cars and 80 participants. The route started from the coastal city of Tuy Hoa to Hoa Thinh commune, where fields and gardens recovered after the November 2025 flood. Participants visited historical sites and gave gifts to two underprivileged households. Organizers plan to expand the program with motorcycle and bicycle tours.

Daihatsu Hijet converted into a compact motorhome

Japanese company Direct Cars has introduced two camper versions based on the Daihatsu Hijet. The Dune Rover model with Raptor protective coating and sleeping for four is equipped with a kitchen, refrigerator, and air conditioning, but lacks a toilet and shower. The more urban PLAT version features an aerodynamic body and an enlarged kitchen area. Both models use a 660 cc engine and are offered with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with prices starting from ¥4.39 million.
