The number of people living full-time in motorhomes in France is growing, driven by the housing crisis and alternative lifestyles. No official statistics exist, but associations estimate several thousand individuals, including retirees, remote workers, and low-income earners. Key challenges include high fuel and maintenance costs, energy management in winter, and administrative hurdles like domiciliation and insurance. Municipalities are tightening parking regulations, leading to tensions, while the lack of a clear legal framework leaves residents vulnerable.

Converting a caravan into a guest room risks a heavy fine

Using a caravan as a permanent guest room on a property may be classified as illegal construction. Under French law, if the caravan loses mobility (wheels removed, placed on a concrete base) and is used for more than three months a year, it is treated as a building. The fine for such a violation can reach €90,000, and the court may order demolition with a daily penalty of up to €500 for non-compliance.
