Caroline Matichard from the Federation of Campers, Caravanners and Motorhomers explained the rules for using motorhomes and camper vans in France. Vehicles in category M1 (motorhomes, camper vans) are treated as passenger cars under traffic laws. Sleeping in a camper van on a regular parking spot is allowed unless prohibited by a municipal decree, but setting up chairs, awnings, or other camping equipment is forbidden. Wild camping is banned on beaches, near monuments, near water intake points, in national parks and nature reserves; the fine for violation is 135 euros.
