Thousands of free campsites in Australia are switching to a paid system, threatening the lifestyle of travelling retirees ('grey nomads'). Traveller and survivalist 'Outback Mike' Atkinson notes that finding free spots is becoming harder, especially on the east coast of New South Wales. However, he says free places still exist away from the coast.
Atkinson recommends not posting favourite spots on social media to avoid overcrowding and environmental damage. In response, state governments are introducing camping fees in national parks, as in Victoria, and testing new booking systems in Western Australia. This could limit access for retirees on a budget.
